A plain-English guide to every status you might see on FedEx tracking.
FedEx has scanned and taken possession of your package from the shipper or drop-off location. This is the first tracking scan and confirms the package is in the FedEx network. Tracking should update at each subsequent facility scan.
Your package is moving through the FedEx network between hubs and sorting facilities. You will see the current facility location and timestamps. Multiple "In Transit" updates are normal for packages traveling long distances.
Your package has arrived at the FedEx facility closest to your delivery address and is being sorted for the final delivery route. Delivery to your door is typically scheduled for the next business day.
Your package has been loaded onto a delivery vehicle and is out for delivery today. FedEx Express deliveries may arrive by 10:30 AM or 12 PM depending on the service. Standard FedEx Ground and Home Delivery arrive by 8 PM.
Your package has been delivered. The scan record includes the delivery location (front door, garage, receptionist, etc.) and time. If you can't locate it, check with household members and neighbors, and look around all entry points to your home.
An unexpected event prevented delivery as planned. Common causes: incorrect address, business closed, signature required with no one available, or a weather delay. FedEx usually attempts redelivery the next business day automatically. You can also reschedule via FedEx Delivery Manager.
Your package has been transferred to another delivery agent for final delivery — typically USPS for FedEx Ground Economy (formerly SmartPost) shipments. Once tendered, you may also be able to track it with the USPS tracking number if provided.
Your package is being held at a FedEx facility or authorized retail location (FedEx Office, Walgreens, etc.) for you to pick up. FedEx typically holds packages for 7 calendar days. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID that matches the delivery name.

Common questions about tracking FedEx packages.
Your FedEx tracking number is printed on your shipping receipt, on the label of the package, and in your shipping confirmation email. It is typically 12 or 15 digits for Express and Ground, 20 digits for Ground Economy (SmartPost), or 22 digits for some barcode labels. If you ordered from an online retailer, check your order confirmation or account page — most retailers post the FedEx tracking number within a few hours of creating the shipment.
FedEx Ground delivers to business addresses Monday through Friday, while FedEx Home Delivery is designed specifically for residential addresses and delivers Tuesday through Saturday, with optional evening and appointment delivery. The pricing is the same for both. When you order from an online retailer and have it shipped to your home, it almost always ships via FedEx Home Delivery. Shippers choose which service to use based on whether the address is residential or commercial.
"On FedEx vehicle for delivery" means your package has been scanned onto a delivery truck and is actively out for delivery today. FedEx Express shipments typically arrive by 10:30 AM or 12 PM depending on the service level. FedEx Ground and Home Delivery arrive by 8 PM for residential addresses. The delivery sequence is set each morning by route optimization — you won't know exactly when your stop is, but the package will arrive the same day barring an unforeseen issue.
A delivery exception means an unexpected event has prevented FedEx from completing delivery as planned. Common causes include: an incorrect or incomplete delivery address, a business being closed at time of delivery, a required signature with no one available, adverse weather conditions, or a federal holiday. In most cases, FedEx will automatically attempt redelivery the next business day. You can also use FedEx Delivery Manager to reschedule, redirect to a FedEx location, or authorize release without a signature.
Yes — through the FedEx Delivery Manager service (free to sign up at fedex.com), you can redirect a package to a different address, request a hold at a FedEx location, or change the delivery date. Some redirect options are free, while others — particularly address changes to a different city — may incur a fee. Note that some shippers restrict redirect options, so not every package can be redirected. Redirects must be requested before the package is out for delivery.
FedEx holds packages at authorized retail locations (FedEx Office, Walgreens, Dollar General, etc.) for 7 calendar days after the package arrives. For packages held at a FedEx facility or station after a failed delivery, the hold is typically 5 business days. After that, the package is returned to the shipper. To pick up, bring a valid government-issued photo ID that matches the name on the delivery. You can also bring the door tag number FedEx left if you have it.
