UPS Tracking Number Formats

UPS uses a few distinct tracking number formats depending on the service used.

Standard UPS

1Z Format

Starts with 1Z, followed by a 6-character shipper number, 2-digit service level, 8-digit package identifier, and 1 check digit. Total of 18 characters.

Example

1Z 999 AA1 01 2345 6784
Mail Innovations

T + 10 Digits

UPS Mail Innovations numbers start with a capital T followed by exactly 10 digits. Used for lightweight packages delivered via USPS for the final mile.

Example

T028 4521 308
SurePost

9-Digit Number

UPS SurePost packages sometimes use a simple 9-digit numeric tracking number. Delivery is completed by USPS, so the number may also appear in USPS tracking once transferred.

Example

123 456 789

All standard UPS tracking numbers begin with "1Z"

If your tracking number starts with 1Z, it is definitively a UPS shipment. The subsequent characters encode the shipper account, service type, and a unique package identifier — all readable by UPS's logistics systems for precise routing and delivery confirmation.

UPS Delivery Status Guide

What each UPS tracking status actually means for your shipment.

Order Processed: Return to Shipper

The shipper has created a shipping label and transmitted order data to UPS, but UPS has not yet physically received the package. It's still at the shipper's facility.

Pickup Scan

UPS has physically collected the package. The first scan in the UPS network — from this point forward, real-time tracking updates will appear as the package moves through the network.

In Transit

Your package is moving through UPS's network of hubs and distribution centers. You'll see multiple scan events as it travels from facility to facility toward the delivery destination.

Out for Delivery

The package has been loaded onto a UPS delivery vehicle. Expect delivery by end of business (typically 7–9 PM). UPS My Choice members can often track the driver's location in real time.

Delivered

The package has been successfully delivered. The scan includes the time, date, and delivery location (e.g., "Front Door" or "Receptionist Desk"). Proof of delivery is available on ups.com.

Delivery Attempt — No Access

UPS attempted delivery but could not complete it — common reasons include a locked gate, no signature available, or an inaccessible address. A UPS InfoNotice will be left with instructions for re-delivery or pickup.

Exception / Delay

An unexpected event has disrupted normal transit — such as severe weather, a missed connection, a damaged label, or an address issue. UPS will typically provide an updated estimated delivery date.

Transferred to Post Office (SurePost)

For UPS SurePost shipments, the package has been transferred to USPS for final-mile delivery. From this point, track using your USPS tracking number, which UPS provides alongside the original tracking details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about UPS tracking and delivery.

All UPS tracking numbers start with 1Z — what does it mean?

The "1Z" prefix is a UPS identifier standard since the 1980s. The characters that follow encode the shipper account number (6 characters), the service level indicator (2 digits), a package identifier (8 digits), and a check digit — all readable by UPS's logistics systems for precise routing and delivery confirmation. So a number like 1Z999AA10123456784 tells UPS exactly who shipped the package, which service was selected, and uniquely identifies that parcel in their global network.

What does "Out for Delivery" mean for UPS?

"Out for Delivery" means your package has been loaded onto a UPS delivery vehicle and is actively en route to you. UPS drivers typically complete their routes by end of business — usually 7–9 PM local time, though most residential deliveries happen between 9 AM and 7 PM. UPS My Choice members can often see a narrower 2-hour delivery window on the day of delivery.

My UPS package shows delivered but I didn't receive it — what should I do?

First, check with neighbors, your building's mailroom or front desk, and any secondary delivery locations around your address (porches, side doors, garages). UPS sometimes leaves packages in covered areas or with a neighbor for security. Check the delivery scan on ups.com — it often shows the exact location where the package was left. If still missing after 24 hours, file a claim at ups.com or call 1-800-742-5877. UPS will investigate and can often recover lost packages or initiate a claims process with the shipper.

Can I change the delivery address on a UPS package?

Yes, through UPS My Choice you can redirect a package to a different address, reroute it to a UPS Access Point location, or request that the driver hold it for a later delivery date. The shipper must have enabled these options when creating the shipment. Address changes sometimes incur a fee and are subject to UPS approval. Importantly, changes must be made before the package is already loaded for delivery (i.e., before "Out for Delivery" status appears).

What is UPS SurePost and how does it differ from regular UPS Ground?

UPS SurePost is a hybrid service where UPS handles bulk transit to a local USPS facility, and the United States Postal Service completes final-mile delivery. It's considerably cheaper than UPS Ground and is popular with high-volume e-commerce shippers sending lightweight packages. The trade-off is that it typically adds 1–2 days to delivery time compared to UPS Ground, and once transferred to USPS, final tracking updates come from USPS rather than UPS.

How long does UPS hold a package at a UPS Access Point?

UPS holds packages at Access Point locations — such as retail stores, pharmacies, or The UPS Store locations — for 7 calendar days. After that, the package is returned to the shipper. UPS sends notifications (email or SMS) as the hold period approaches its end, giving you time to pick up before it's returned. Bring a government-issued photo ID and your tracking number when collecting your package.
